2020 Qualifier Events Dates & Lakes Announcement

The MO TBF Board of Directors met on Saturday December 14, 2019 and approved the following dates and lakes for the MO-TBF Qualifier events for the 2020 Season. Qualifier #1 – March 21 & 22 – Pomme de Terre Lake. Qualifier #2 – June 6 & 7 Stockton Lake. The date for the 3rd Annual Team Open at Lake of the Ozarks will be set at our next board meeting. The 2020 KS/MO National Semi-final will be held September 19 and 20 at Truman Lake. Mark your calendars! We are looking forward to a great 2020 season at Missouri TBF.

2019 Bass Pro Shop FLW High School Open Lake of the Ozarks

56 boats competed on Saturday, October 19, 2019 at the Bass Pro Shops / FLW High School Open Lake of the Ozarks. The bite was pretty tough only a few teams coming in with a five fish limit. Buzz bait was the primary producer of the bigger fish. Top 5 teams qualify for the National Championship at Lacrosse, WI in June, 2020. Congratulations!!! Truman Lake is Back!

Missouri TBF’s Second State Qualifier is a Success

After dealing with a 2-month weather delay the Missouri TBF held its second state qualifier at Truman Lake on August 10th and 11th.  The lake had receded from its near record crest in June to a more fishable level of about 12 feet over normal pool.  The good news is that the flooded bushes and trees along with the steady current had the fish feeding aggressively for most of the day.  Several anglers were able to read the current and figure the proper points and ledges that positioned the fish to find strong limits each day. 

The weather conditions for the 2-day event was fortunately not as hot as usual but with plenty of good ole Missouri summer humidity.  Temperatures on Saturday started at 72 degrees and peaked at 91 under bright skies with SSE winds at 5-7 mph.  Sunday was a variable day with clouds and a few showers.  Temperatures started out at 78 degrees and hit 89 later in the day with winds shifting from the West at 6 mph to the East at 9 by weigh-in.  Anglers who could adjust their bait color and presentation to the wind and cloud conditions were able to keep the bite going all day while other anglers complained about an “on and off” bite throughout the day.

Leading the pack on the boater side was Jeff Barrickman from Crane, Missouri.  While primarily fishing his local Table Rock, his modest familiarity with Truman did not hold him back as he had strong 5 fish limits each day. He led the field Saturday with 5 fish for 18.82 and followed that up with a Sunday sack of 16.89 for a total two-day weight of 35.71.  This is even more impressive when you consider that we were fishing under Missouri’s no-cull rules, which resulted in Jeff finishing each day by earlier morning.  Jeff capitalized on the current and used Texas rigged plastics to find concentrations of fish on key current swept points on the main lake. 

Kenny Shinn lead the “local” anglers with a very strong two-day total of 32.26 pounds for second place.  Kenny had a very steady approach to the tournament catching several keepers each day for 15.4 pounds on day one and 16.86 on day two.  He concentrated on the shallow bush bite using a buzzbait early and a jig and wobble head later in the day.  His bite was mostly on the main lake area with a few fish coming up the Grand River arm. 

Finishing just behind Kenny was another Truman Lake expert (and Ranger Cup winner), Don Heiser with 31.12 pounds. Like the other two leaders, Don had strong 5 fish limit each day of 17.21 and 13.91 respectively.  Don also concentrated on the main lake and Grand River arm probing brushy points primarily with a Carolina rig.  Like all our top three anglers, Don proved to be a generous guide, helping each of his co-anglers to 5 fish limits each day too!

Rounding out the top boater spots was Robert Hime (our Table Rock Lake Champion) with 28.81 pounds, Dennis Maggart with 27.52, Tom Kauffmann with 26.96 and Tom McGovern with 25.47.  Overall 113 fish were caught for 342.19 pounds by 30 anglers!  

The Co-Angler side was dominated by some very familiar faces. Taking first place with two very impressive bags was one of our strongest co-anglers, Gary Martin.  He sacked 16.93 pounds on day one and then followed that up with an even bigger sack of 17.58 on day 2 for a total of 34.51 pounds.  Gary drug a Carolina Rigged brush hog (in his secret color) along with a DH Shaky Head to catch most of his fish.  Gary is used to the winner stand with consistent top 5 finishes including his 2nd place finish this spring in the MO TBF Qualifier at Table Rock.

Finishing second was our Table Rock co-angler champion, Jason Morisaki.  Jason also had an early 5 fish limit each day with 15.46 and 10.34 for grand total of 25.8 pounds. While he caught multiple keepers each day, he was not able to cull up significantly after his initial 5. Most of his fish came on a Texas rigged green pumpkin brush hog but a couple fell to a Carolina rig, dragging a hump with a green pumpkin creature bait. He had to make a bit of adjustment on day two as his boater concentrated on secondary points, so he supplemented the Texas rigged brush hog with a mag finesse worm on a shaky head proved just as effective for his early limit.

Our final winner was also a regular on the podium, Jon Small.  Jon is very familiar with Truman and was able to overcome a slow start on Saturday (7.91 pounds) to finish strong with 13.71 on Sunday for a two-day total of 21.62.  He caught most of his fish by pitching a 10-inch June Bug worm to bushes or dragging a shaky head on points. 

Since both of our top co-anglers had already qualified for the TBF National Semi-Final our 4th place co-angler Grant Hinton (21.19 pounds) and 5th place John Williamson (15.35) both secured a place on the Missouri State team!

With these weights it was no surprise that several big bass were brought to the stage each day.  On the boater side Saturday saw multiple 4 pounders weighed and 4 over 5, the largest being Greg Lampton’s 5.92.  To prove that it was not a fluke, Greg followed that up with the day 2 big bass on the boater side of 5.59! Both bass came off the same point in about 10 feet of water and fell to brush hog on a wobble head (secret color).  The big bass on the co-angler side on day one went to Jason Morisaki with a 5.4-pound toad that bit on a brush hog on a main lake point near a deep channel.  Day two co-angler big bass (5.11 pounds) went to our overall winner Gary Martin who caught it early on a brush hog.

The MO TBF Board would like to thank all the participants for the patience and support this year.  The high water made for a scheduling challenge and we appreciate everyone’s understanding and cooperation.  It has been a great year for the Missouri TBF with significant growth in clubs and individual membership.  We simply could not succeed without the help of our membership and the great attitude.  The State Team and Club Champions will now be preparing for the TBF National Semi-Final September 21st and 22nd at Wilson Lake. We have an exceptionally strong team this year and I am sure we are going to be able to return the favor to the Kansas TBF and bring the District 7 crown back to Missouri.

Missouri TBF Hosts First Joint Student Angler Federation High School and Junior State Championship

Mother Nature smiled on the Missouri – The Bass Federation (TBF) and the TBF Student Angler Federation as they hosted their first joint Student Angler Federation (SAF) High School and Junior Angler State Championship on Sunday, March 17th at Lake of the Ozarks.  Again for 2019 the TBF partnered with National Youth Fishing Association (NYFA) to host the event which allowed a huge field of 270 High School teams along with 54 Junior teams to enjoy some beautiful early spring weather.  The morning started out brisk, the bright sun, clear skies and light winds allowed the anglers to quickly warm up with the first nice spring weekend of the season with high temps topping out near 60 degrees.  While the weather for the event was nice, the long cold winter was not conducive to good fishing with water temps still in the low 40’s.  The rapid warm up along with thawing snow and rain muddied up the normally clear Ozark impoundment adding even more challenge for the anglers. While fishing was tough, most anglers agreed that a tough day on the water was still nicer than a good day at school! 

The new joint format meant that there were over 320 boats to launch from the PB-2 Marina which required organization and the cooperation of all the participants.  High School Teams representing all corners of the state were sent out first at approximately 7:00 AM in multiple flights, with the first flight due back at 3:00 PM.  The Junior Anglers were sent out last with the last boat leaving the cove at 8:05 AM, a testament to the TBF and NYFA staff.  The Junior Anglers were also flighted with the first group due back at 2:00 PM, which hampered their chances at the improving afternoon bite.  The Junior Anglers now follow the same format as the SAF High School teams with a 2-person team and a standing boat captain from their school.  This format has proven popular with the SAF across the country and provides each young angler with the opportunity to relax and compete with a familiar partner and adult.  Fishing is the only sport where youth with disabilities can compete on a level playing field with other students and we were extremely proud to have several competitors join us for this event.

This was the second year in a row with record turn-out for this event! This represents the largest SAF High School event in the country and one of the largest Junior Angler events.  While the participation level is a clear sign of the enthusiasm for youth fishing it simply couldn’t happen without the help of so many fine sponsors. The countless hours of work necessary to put on an event of this size is hard to imagine unless you have seen it.  J.P. Sells and the NYFA staff along with Joey and Karen from the SAF national office did the heavy lifting and you will not find a finer group of folks dedicated full-time to mentoring young   through our sport of bass fishing.  with help from local Missouri TBF volunteers.  Events like this are not possible without the generous support of our corporate sponsors such as Ranger Boats, Lowrance, Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s, Booyah, Berkley, Evinrude, St. Croix, Lew’s, Favorite Fishing, Motorguide, Eagle Claw, Okuma, Rapala, Sufix Line, VMC Hooks, LiveTarget, MoveU Apparel, Fishouflage, Strike King, Faculty OF Fishing, Pursuit TV and of course FLW.  Local support from vendors and the Missouri TBF was also critical with special thanks to Tom Kaufmann, Chris Dougan, Karl Buck, Richard Winchester and Tom McGovern along with the staff at PB-2 Marina.  Finally, a thank you to J.P. and the members of Missouri TBF that made sure that every student, regardless of financial situation or physical capabilities, got an opportunity to fish and enjoy this spectacular event.

SAF Missouri High School State Championship

Landing at the top of the field was the team of Colin Ames and Rider Hall from Bolivar High School who scratched out 5 keepers on a very tough day for 15.78 pounds.  The margin of their victory was provided by a 5.80 lunker that distanced themselves from the only other 2 teams with 5 fish limits.  They caught their fish early on a bone colored Rick Clunn Jerkbait up the Gravois in about 9 feet of water.  The clearer and slightly warmer water (43 degrees) allowed them to catch fish both early as well as later after the sun warmed the water.  They want to thank their boat captain as well as their sponsors, Denali Rods, Lew’ Reels and Marine Repair in Carter.

Second place belonged to the team of Jackson Stephens and Jake Lange from Lindbergh High School.  One of the few teams with 5 fish limits, they threw both a Ned rig (PBJ color) along with a Rage Swimmer swimbait to fill out their sack.  One of the few teams with action all day they caught over a dozen fish by focusing on the 10-15’ depth range and looked for cleaner water (2-3 foot visibility) to concentrate the fish.

Third place went to the familiar team of River Clunn and Zack Pierce from Ava High School.  This team finished strong at the first championship last year in similarly cold conditions, proving their ability to figure out the finicky early spring bite.  Their bag totaled only 3 fish, but the quality was right, weighing in at 11.01.  They proved their determination by fishing hard to the end with their 2 big bites, including a 5.62-pound lunker, coming after 3:00 o’clock.  Not surprisingly their fish came on a Rick Clunn 1.5 square bill in River Red on chunk rock banks.  They found these quality fish in warmer, dirty water with only 6-12 inch visibility.

On the High School side big bass honors went to Brady House and Justin McCarthy of Nixa with an early spring female weighing in at 6.59 pounds. As mentioned above, 2nd big bass went to our winning team from Bolivar, while the third place went to our third place-team from Ava. The amazing turnout for this event allows Missouri to send the top 27 teams to the SAF National Championship this summer at Pickwick Lake! Missouri TBF Junior Angler State Championship

The Junior Angler was led by the pair of Mathew Malmstron and Mason Geisler from Helias Catholic School in Jefferson City.  Sacking 4 fish for 7.98 pounds they easily outdistanced the field in number and total weight.  What was even impressive than their catch was the fact that this came in their first ever tournament against a very large field of boats, what a way to start a career in tournament bass fishing!  A white shad jerkbait produced their consistent bite on what proved to be a tough day for all our younger anglers.  They would like to send a big thank you to their sponsors and their boat captain for helping them make this a very special day.

Finishing second in our Junior division was the team of Levi Fredrickson and Landon Flood from Hurley with 2 fish for 6.56 pounds.  Their sack was anchored by the Junior Big Bass of 4.91 pounds and which was caught on a French Pearl Jerkbait.  Rounding out the top three was Ely Tolliver and Bryce Koll of Lincoln High School.  They had 2 fish and finished just out of second with a weight of 6.51 pounds.  Like most other teams they found the jerkbait to be the most productive lure throughout the day. 

Our Junior anglers proved they had a tough challenge on Lake of the Ozarks with the cold, dirty water with only 25% of the field weighing a keeper bass.  The later start along with the early check-in meant they missed the most productive bites of the day so they should be proud of their efforts regardless of the results.  As the top team, Malmstron and Geisler are now qualified to represent Missouri at the TBF Junior Angler World Championship in Arkansas this August.  This event is scheduled to coincide with the Forrest Wood Cup to give the young anglers access to the FLW Expo and a chance to trade fishing secrets with some of the FLW pros.  It’s a great event for the kids and an exciting opportunity for family and friends to support their team while also seeing the worlds best pros in action.
